We Will Continue Your Legacy

We are very sorry to have to tell you that this month we tragically lost our Coordinator and great friend David Baker, who sadly passed away on August 1st following a short illness.

David was truly passionate about supporting young people through the GOFISH programme, having built it up from scratch with the help of George Daulman, and latterly running the programme with Nicola Davis, both young ambassadors and entrepreneurs. Not only did David dedicate much of his time to supporting young and vulnerable people, but he did it with pure joy and always went the extra mile to ensure these young people could have a promising future.

David was also a prominent and well known figure within the local business community, winning the Civic Award in 2019 in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Trowbridge. He played a huge part in promoting the town for over 25 years, through business, education and encouraging entrepreneurship in young people. He was involved with the local Chamber of Commerce for many years and his drive and passion for promoting the town led to a prominent role in the development of the Wessex Association of Chambers of Commerce. David was also involved in setting up the Trowbridge County Town Initiative, the Trowbridge Town Team and Transforming Trowbridge. During his time spent on the Board of Governors of Clarendon College, David developed and nurtured students who had become disengaged and alienated within the school environment.

From all of us at GOFISH:
Thank you David for all that you have done for us. We will continue your legacy and remember you always.

There will be a funeral service for David at Semington Crematorium on Tuesday 20th August 2019 at 2.30pm, followed by a wake at Trowbridge Rugby Club.

Visit to apetito

On the 21st February as part of GOFISH’s monthly ‘Young Entrepreneur Club’, a group of entrepreneurs of all ages and experiences were invited to apetito’s Headquarters to listen to four key speakers about how to succeed in running your own business.

The speakers were successful Entrepreneurs in their own right. Jon Amies of apetito opened the evening on ‘The Importance of Entrepreneurial Skills in Business’, followed by Steve Davis MD of Office Evolution, Len Turner a local businessman and entrepreneur and finally Tracy Parker owner of Leykers in Trowbridge. They all brought a clear message of their own experiences and anecdotes to the well attended audience: hard work, commitment, passion and riding the waves are all key to success.

Zoe Beauvoisin, Learning and Development Manager at apetito commented:
“apetito is thrilled to be a sponsor of GOFISH. Over the past two years, apetito has provided a variety of support to GOFISH, such as offering tours, giving presentations to college Business students and hosting evenings like tonight.”

“apetito will also contribute an award, prizes and certificates at GOFISH’s annual Celebration Evening later this year. Making a real difference to the community in which we live is at the heart of everything we do and our sponsorship enables GOFISH to do more great work in the local area. apetito is also looking to expand our apprenticeship programme this year and is currently offering apprentices in IT and Engineering, furthermore making a positive contribution to the local community and economy.”

David Baker, GOFISH Coordinator and Chair of the Trowbridge Town Team, said:
“The attendance exceeded our expectations and all the young people were a credit to themselves and GOFISH. To name a few we had a budding Ice Cream Vendor who is very passionate and committed, a future Blacksmith, a Childrenswear Designer and a young man who wants to make up-cycled furniture.”

Ulanda, one of our youngest attendee’s at 15 years old, said:
“I’ve learnt that running your own business isn’t always predictable and its important to learn from your mistakes. Networking is also very important.” Natalia, one of GOFISH’s Young Ambassadors said “The mixture of speakers was perfect, from key employee’s of large businesses to owners of smaller independent shops.”

The evening was so well organised by apetito and their team. They also provided food, the same as served to their customers, which was delicious! I suggest in some areas they are the ‘Best Kept Secret’…

First College Workshop

Natalia Orzechowska who has become a GOFISH Ambassador since attending the Young Entrepreneur Programme in her first year at the college and winning two cash prizes presenting to the new students her experiences and how she believes they can benefit from it.

Natalia said: ”The first meeting with Year 1 Business students was very successful and felt like we have gained interest and attention of the individuals about what we do and aim for in this year’s competition. Due to myself being in the same position last year, I now have a better understanding of what I can help the student with for them to achieve better results whilst further improving my skills and contributing to GOFISH. Good Luck to all of the students who will soon start working on their project!”.
